The curse of the mummy!

Hi, it's been a while, but we're back!!! Hurray!! Have you missed us?

Last week, we were practising for our assembly; we performed it for the school and parents last Friday.  It was a bit nerve-racking at the start but we all really enjoyed it.  It was exhilarating!  Did you like it?
Here are some of our favourite bits:
  • SD's favorite part was when Howard Carter stroked his moustache (http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningzone/clips/the-tomb-of-tutankhamun/5183.html)
  • JH's favorite part was when Seth (Adam) got angry and killed Osiris (Sonny)
  • Another favourite bit was when Jacob asked the dead body if he was dead!!!
    'Are you dead?' 'Yes!'
  • CO's favourite part was when EJ said the Ancient Egyptians lived around about the time when Mr Rothwell was born, and when AM (Howard Carter) stroked his mostache!!! Also I enjoyed doing the Apprentice scene to explain Carter's discovery.
On Monday, lots of us handed in our Ancient Egyptian projects. There were magnificent cardboard pyramids, Tutankhamun's death mask, information posters and lots of folders with information in. Can you believe it? We even had a cake Pyramid to eat during the day, yum yum yum!

This is KS's death mask that he made at home, it's really cool isn't it??

Isn't that yummy. Do you want some?

 Spot the screaming boy...

This week, we did some work on newspaper reports and we practised writing quotes. It was a bit hard work, but we managed to do it really well.  You have to remember to put speech marks.  Don't forget or you will be cursed by the mummy!

On Tuesday, we started to make our death masks.  They look a bit eerie, don't they?  This is how we made them: first we painted them in shiny gold, next we did the gothic eye liner and some dark eyebrows.  Then we put some hieroglyphics and patterns onto the foreheads.  After that, we cut out the headdresses and painted them in different colours.  Ta dah!

Also, on Wednesday we all went on a Easter egg hunt in Forest School.  We had to find 16 eggs that
had question clues on them. We had a winning girls team and a winning boys team which won mini eggs - yummy!

I've found another egg!

We won!  Yippeee!!!

On Thursday, we made jewelled collars that only the very rich people could afford in Ancient Egyptian times. We painted the base colour gold, then we went on to paint pasta twirls and tubes different colours and then we stuck them on carefully. Some people stuck on beads and sequins they had brought in from home. They look pretty, don't they?

Here we are at the start of the lesson wearing our aprons.  Don't we look groovy?!!

Check out how messy we got!!!

Here are some of the finished ones.  Do you like them?

After half term, we have a week left of our Pharaohs topic.  :-(
We will be doing a funeral procession wearing our death masks and jewelled collars, as well as holding our canopic jars.  Stay tuned for the photos.

Have a great Easter holiday break everyone.
Please leave us a comment, we love to read them!

whacky week !!!

WOW! What a week, class 4D have had. We had Mad Science in assembly, on Monday morning, it was sooooo brilliant!

When we went back to class, we separated liquids and non liquids (solids), then we made gloop in pairs.  (It looked a bit like something that comes out of your nose)!!!

Who's cleaning that mess up?!!

When you touch it all the particles are pushed together and it is like a solid but when we left it, the particles moved apart and it dribbled down our fingers.  Errr!  It behaved like a solid and a liquid which was a bit strange!  Some of us went to show Mrs Pitt and left a bit of a mess in her office!  Whoops!
At class 4W, we tested the temperature of hot water in different cups.  Wrapped round the cups was  different materials like bubble wrap, foil, fur and blue paper.
In 4S, we tested a man figure on a parachute, we were looking at air resistance.
It was a fun and messy day of science!

On Tuesday, we  had a tennis session and we practised loads of cool tricks, like 'Around The World', 'The Hotdog' and 'The Maradonna'.  To warm up, we did some stretches and some superhero poses, for example, the Hulk, Spiderman, Catwoman and Batman.  Can you guess which ones we are doing below?

That's all for now.  Please leave us a comment.

I want my mummy!

Wow, we have been so busy this week. On Monday, we did some headlines for the discovery of King Tut's tomb. We made sure they were short and snappy, some of us used alliteration.
'Tomb of Doom!'
'Magnificent Mummy!'
'Gods Guard Gold!'
'Marvel at Magnificent Mummy!'

We also did some guided reading and later on, we learnt how to draw in proportion in art.
On Tuesday we had fun, doing some mummyfing. We were split into groups to practise the mummification process.  First we washed the body, then we put a slit in the side. After that, we pulled the brain out with a hook and took all of the organs out, but we left the heart in.
Then we filled and covered the body with natron to dry it out.  Once that was complete, we washed it and wrapped it in bandages.  Then we placed on the fake eyes and decoarated it with amulets.  Here are some of the pictures:

Washing the body.

Yanking the brain out.

Yanking more of the brain out.

Placing the fake eyes on.

Decorating with amulets.

On Wednesday we did some swimming, some of us practised breast stroke, and push and glide.  Mr Rothwell came with us and he got splashed - hahahahaha!

On Thursday we went on Purple Mash and it was fun! You can take funny photos with the MashCam, you can do an animation slide show, you can colour a photo of things, you can create your own monster and more.  We are going on it at the weekend!

We used the MashCam to take a picture of our face inside a Pharaoh!!!

On Friday, we wached class 4W's assemberley, it was about the body. We also did guided reading, we also practiced a bit of our class assemberley but it is a surprise so we can't say anything about it yet. Then we did some map work on Egypt and found the River Nile and the Capital city and other special places.
That is it for this week, we will keep you posted

Pharaohs, Pharaohs and even more Pharaohs!

Welcome back, from class 4D!  We have started our Egyptian topic called Pharaohs.

On Monday, we went to see Professor McGinty, he taught us about Ancient Egyptian times. He made us laugh when he told us about the cow dung in Egyptian bread! Eurgh!!

He dressed up two people (FC and SB) in Egyptian clothes, then he organised a pretend marriage between them!   It was so funny!  They were a bit embarrassed!
'It tickled me the way he said 'would you like to marry this man?' ' SB

We made Egyptian headdresses and painted them traditional colours of blue and gold. We had a huge parade down the corridor wearing our masks.  It was hilarious! Scott led the way!

On Wednesday, we made square-based pyramids out of clay.
'The clay was all cold and squishy!' NH

AM and NH used a folding method for one of their pyramids.

Today, we did an archaeological dig outside.  One of the groups found some Ancient Egyptian artefacts.
'We found Egyptian statues and a black mummified cat and a death mask'. ME, KS

After lunch, the whole of Year 4 met Howard Carter, a.k.a. Mr Crees (but that's a secret), and he told us about how he became an archaeologist and how he found the tomb of Tutunkhamun.  First of all, he was a painter.

We asked Howard Carter some open-ended questions, like,
'Did the waterboy find the steps first?'
'How did you feel when you saw Tutunkhamun's death mask?'
'What did you find in the antechamber?'

We all came to school dressed as Pharaohs and Ancient Egyptian people today.  Some people came as mummies, very scary ones at that!!  Some people came dressed as Howard Carter himself!!!  Look at us all...
