Fair Trade

Yesterday in maths, Green set did a mental maths test, I got 13/20.  (It was a bit hard but I was pleased).

In the afternoon, we learnt about FairTrade by researching on our iPads. I researched on a website and found out which countries produce fairtrade products, such as Ghana, China and Cameroon, we had fun.  Also we made a poster which we put a lot of detail into, to try and encourage people to buy fairtrade products.  By Harvey
Fair trade is when people in poorer countries work hard to grow and pick crops but they don't get much money to buy medicines there fore we buy them and the money goes back to the poor countries. By Connor

Food, glorious food...

Hello again!
Do you want to know what we've been getting up to?!!

Last Wednesday, we all made spicy tacos for Mexican day.  Some people burnt their mouths, like they were on fire!  This is what some tacos contained:  cheese, tomato, peppers, onions, lettuce, cucumber, lime juice, spring onions, black beans, mexican spice, tomato salsa and some fresh corriander too.  Wow!  They were scrumptious!

Are you going to fit it all in your mouth?!!

On Thursday, in maths, some of us did division problems and in Forest School we made bread with different toppings including jam, gold syrup and normal syrup.  Then in the afternoon, the thing we had been waiting all week for finally came - the whole of Year 4 visited Peachy Keens, the restaurant, to sample foods from around the world.  It was THE BEST!!  We got to see some food being cooked too! We tried foods from Thailand, Italy, India, China, Mexico and Japan.

Check out the chocolate fountain.  Don't you wish you could have some?

Looking forward to getting some food, waiting patiently.

The chefs and staff came outside for a photo with all of us, at the end.  Say 'We love Peachy Keens!'

On Friday, we had Chinese day and made some spring rolls.  We also did some still life sketches and watercolour paintings of a selection of fruit and veg.

It was such a great week - full of tastes from around the world.

Here are some of the finished pieces.  What do you think?

Greek Day

Geia sas!  (Hello in Greek)
Today it was Greek day, we all tried some olives in the morning, they were disgusting but Elise loved them.  In the afternoon, we made some Greek salad, it was delightful! We mixed olives, feta cheese, cucumber, tomato, lettuce, peppers and we made our own dressing with lime juice, olive oil and herbs.  Delicious!

Ancient Egyptian Funeral Procession!

It's the summer term and we're back to tell you what we've been getting up to...
Tuesday was our first day back, we started to make our canopic jars ready for our Ancient Egyptian Funeral Procession at the end of the week. We used mod-rock and got really dirty, but it was fun nonetheless!

On Wednesday, green maths set practised the 'chunking method' for division using 'chunking challenge' cards and 'brain buster' cards! In the afternoon, we had a speaking and listening literacy lesson to find out who we think murdered Tutankhamun. Which one of these suspects do you think it was???

    The Tomb Builders?

    King Tut's doctor?

    Uncle Aye?

  Or...  King Tut's wife?

After literacy, we all went swimming for the last time.
On Thursday we painted our canopic jars using gold and bronze paint, and added some hieroglyphics to them in pen.

On Friday, we finished our newspaper reports by writing captions for our pictures of Howard Carter's discovery.
At the end of the day we did our funeral procession for a Pharaoh, down the corridor.

We had four 'professional mourners' - their job was to wail loudly and to pull at their hair and clothes.  Miss Doyle found it so funny, she couldn't stop laughing and even started to cry!!

The professional mourners are wailing loudly here, and waving their hands around wildly, tearing at their hair and clothes!!

The priest led the way, followed by two children carrying the coffin of the Pharaoh.  Isis and Nephesis walked alongside the coffin to help protect and guide the dead body to the afterlife whilst some children played musical instruments to help create an atmosphere.  When we got to the hall, we pretended to cross the River Nile in boats.  Then we wrote spells in 'The Book of The Dead' and said prayers to help the dead body reach the afterlife, safely.

Writing in 'The book of the Dead'

The priest performed 'The opening of the mouth' cermony which was a very important part of the funeral.  He touched the dead person's face with a sacred stone which was meant to open the dead person's eyes and allow them to see, eat and speak in their afterlife.

We've had a great week!

Next week, we will start our new topic 'Global Gourmet'.  It means we get to taste foods from different countries - yummy!  Stay tuned to find out what we get up to.
Bye for now!
